Although 28-year-old Rashford has returned to Manchester United for pre-season training, his future remains uncertain. United co-owner Ratcliffe has made it clear he does not want to see the England striker join a direct Premier League rival.
Marcus Rashford, who spent last season on loan at Barcelona, returned to Manchester United's Carrington training ground on Sunday after his post-World Cup break. He then traveled to Dublin to join the team in preparation for Wednesday's pre-season match against Leeds United at Crook Park.
It is understood that Rashford plans to speak with manager Carrick after Manchester United concludes their trip to Ireland and after Saturday's friendly against AC Milan in Poland. However, his future with the team remains uncertain.
According to the Mirror, Ratcliffe hopes to push for Rashford's departure this summer to reduce the team's wage burden, but he is unwilling to sell the England player to Arsenal, Liverpool or Manchester City.
Furthermore, Ratcliffe also opposes loaning Rashford to a direct Premier League rival. Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Tottenham Hotspur had previously expressed interest in loaning Rashford, hoping to keep him until the end of the season. Manchester United are concerned that if Rashford joins any of these clubs and helps them secure Champions League qualification, it would put the club in an awkward position.
Rashford is not opposed to staying at Manchester United and trying to regain his starting position under Carrick, but at present, he prefers to seek new challenges and hopes to continue his career resurgence at another team.
If the transfer ultimately falls through, Rashford can choose to fulfill the remaining two years of his contract with Manchester United and leave Old Trafford as a free agent in the summer of 2028. Alternatively, he can use his performances in the new season to prove himself again, paving the way for a more desirable transfer opportunity in 2027.
In fact, a similar plan existed when Rashford joined Barcelona on loan last season. During his time at Camp Nou, he performed exceptionally well, making 49 appearances in all competitions, contributing 14 goals and 14 assists.
Barcelona previously had an option to buy Rashford for £26 million, but ultimately did not activate that clause, instead opting to sign Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United for £69 million.
There had been previous reports that Barcelona might loan Rashford again. However, during the team's preseason trip to Birmingham earlier this month, manager Flick essentially ruled out this possibility.
Flick said at the time: "You can't be sure about the future of loaned players, and our current situation isn't suitable for that. But I enjoyed working with Rashford. He's an excellent player and a great person. The team will miss him, and I will miss him, but that's reality, and we have to accept it."
Flick also spoke about Gordon's signing: "Ultimately, we signed Anthony Gordon. From the first time I spoke with him, I could feel his passion for Barcelona. I'm very happy that he's joined us."
Therefore, Rashford's destination this summer remains uncertain, but what is certain is that if he ultimately leaves Manchester United, the direct transfer route between Premier League giants has likely been closed by Ratcliffe in advance.
