According to Sky Sports Germany, Manchester City's new manager, Maresca, has a close relationship with Haaland, but the chances of Haaland succeeding Bernardo Silva as captain are slim.
Maresca already has clear captaincy rules.
Erling Haaland has returned to Manchester City after his World Cup break. His outstanding performances and goal-scoring efficiency have earned him a high status within the club. To date, Haaland has made 198 official appearances for Manchester City, scoring 162 goals and providing 30 assists. However, his chances of succeeding Bernardo Silva as captain are slim.
Maresca said at a Manchester City press conference: "When I was at Leicester City and Chelsea, I had a rule: if we scored, the captain had to come to the sidelines to listen to instructions, not to celebrate. However, if the captain scores himself, of course he can celebrate."
He added with a laugh, "So if Erling is the captain, we're in trouble, oh my god, can you imagine?"
Ruben Diaz is likely to succeed Silva.
Maresca's stance is clear: Haaland has scored too many goals, leaving too little time for sideline adjustments after each goal.
"Even if it's only for two or three minutes, there are always things that need to be adjusted," Maresca said. Therefore, Guardiola's successor will most likely choose Diaz as the new captain, as he will obviously be more likely to go to Maresca for instructions after scoring for Manchester City.
Diaz has already worn the captain's armband in friendly matches against the K League All-Stars and Atletico Madrid, with Manchester City winning 3-1 in both games.
In addition to Haaland, Rodri, and Diaz, Foden is also expected to join the new leadership of Maresca.
