According to The Sun, Tielemans has revealed that Manchester United made two attempts to sign him. Tielemans, 29, joined Manchester United from Aston Villa last month for £35 million after triggering his release clause.
The Belgian international spent seven and a half years in the Premier League, playing for Aston Villa and Leicester City, and scoring in their UEFA Europa League and FA Cup final victories. Manchester United had previously pursued Tielemans under Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag, but the midfielder finally joined the club this summer after getting his third chance.
Tielemans said: "I spoke with the club twice, but nothing came of it, so I've remained calm. It didn't happen immediately after Anderlecht, it happened much later. I haven't spoken with Solskjaer, no."
Tielemans has confirmed that no other clubs had made a serious bid for Atalanta midfielder Ederson after Manchester United's £35 million bid for him fell through. The former Leicester City star hadn't expected to leave Aston Villa, having just helped the team qualify for the Champions League and win the UEFA Europa League.
Tielemans added: "It was mainly my agent who handled this. I was more focused on the World Cup, which was a big deal for me. So I left everything to him. I only found out about the situation when the time was right and the conditions were acceptable. I was very calm about it. When the transfer opportunity came, it would happen if it had to."
“I’ve contacted this club a few times before, but nothing came of it. But that’s just how things are. I just need to keep working hard, do my job well on the field, and everything will fall into place.”
Tielemans had spoken with Manchester United assistant coach Michael Carrick and also knew Evans and Maguire during his four and a half years at Leicester City. Maguire signed a new contract with Manchester United in April, while Evans joined the coaching staff in January after retiring last year.
Tielemans admitted: "Before signing, you always want to know what the head coach thinks of you. I think it's very important to maintain a good relationship with the head coach. But unless the club agrees first, you can't really talk to him directly. So I only had a brief chat before, and we felt a good connection. More conversations happened later."
“He (Carrick) wants me to have more freedom on the field and try my best to organize the team. Obviously, he has his own principles, and I will just try to do what he asks and add my own characteristics. I think it is a great achievement for any player to finally get here. It shows that your career has gone well, first of all, the club has been watching you, and then you finally got here.”
"But it's not over yet. You know, I just want to succeed, but that takes time. After all, I've only been here for about 10 days, and I want to win."
Tielemans also hopes to reunite with Rashford, with whom he was teammates during the latter's four-month loan spell at Aston Villa last season.
Tielemans praised him, saying, "He's excellent. There's a lot of talk about him, a lot of pressure and media attention. But I think he's really fantastic. He's very humble and works very hard. From the first training session, you could see how amazing his touch and acceleration were. That's exactly what Villa needed at the time, so he did a lot of good things during that period, and hopefully he can bring those things here."
