According to The Athletic, Aston Villa striker Brian Maggio and midfielder João Gomez will both miss the start of the season due to injury.

Maggio, who joined in January, only made his official debut in Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup and is expected to return no earlier than September; Gomez, who joined this summer, may be out for 2 to 4 weeks, with the exact timing still uncertain. Both players were injured after the loss to Paris Saint-Germain.
17-year-old Maggio joined Aston Villa from Metz in January for £10 million, but has been unable to play until the club’s registration appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport was approved in August.
FIFA initially rejected Villa's appeal to register the striker on the grounds that he came from an overseas club and was under 18 years old.
He made his official debut in Wednesday's loss to Paris Saint-Germain, starting against the Champions League winners and scoring the equalizer in the team's 1-2 defeat, delivering a standout performance. Forward Watkins was not included in the squad due to his participation in the World Cup with England this summer, while Abraham replaced Maggio in the 78th minute.
Meanwhile, Gomez transferred from Wolves to Aston Villa in July for around £35 million.
He also played the full 78 minutes before Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup defeat, but the 25-year-old midfielder subsequently suffered a calf injury and will now be sidelined for some time.
Aston Villa are currently without midfielder Onana, who suffered a cruciate ligament injury while playing for Belgium in the World Cup.
However, McGinn is expected to be fit for the new Premier League season, having injured his knee during preseason.
Aston Villa will kick off their 2026-27 season with an away match against Brighton on August 23. Emery's team will also face Arsenal, Hull City, Nottingham Forest, and Tottenham Hotspur in the first month of the season.
