According to the Daily Mail, the referee in the World Cup final asked Rajon Messi to "keep an eye on" Kevin Paredes before the final whistle, and new footage of the incident has now been released.
Last month's match between Argentina and Spain descended into chaos after the final whistle. Following Spain's victory, Paredes lost his temper and charged at Eric Garcia and Gave.
Footage now circulating online shows that Slovenian referee Slavko Voncic asked Argentine captain Lionel Messi to restrain the hot-tempered player during the match.
In this successfully captured footage from the referee's perspective, Vincic can be heard saying, "Messi, control Paredes. I don't want... he already has a yellow card. Please control him. Always, always."
Paredes came on as a substitute at halftime, received a yellow card 6 minutes later, and finished the game, but then lost his composure.
The 32-year-old midfielder grabbed Eric Garcia by the neck after Argentina's loss, pushed Garvy to the ground, and appeared to throw a punch. He was also fortunate to avoid being sent off late in regular time for a foul.
FIFA subsequently initiated disciplinary proceedings regarding Paredes' indecent acts. He faces three charges of assault and one charge of unsportsmanlike conduct.
The referee's chest camera also captured the moment when Vincic received his medal from John Nwankwo, who told him "Great job."
Paredes has since returned to club play. Two weeks ago, he played for Boca Juniors in a 2-2 draw against Newell's Old Boys in the Argentine professional league spring season.
In that match, the 32-year-old player once again displayed some "dark art," with one particularly controversial round being a prime example.
Boca Juniors were trailing 1-2 away from home when Paredes appeared to deliberately kick the ball at a fallen opponent in the 68th minute, sparking a conflict on the field.
The player who had just been fouled and was about to get up with his back to Paredes was kicked away by him.
Newell's Old Boys players then angrily surrounded Paredes, and the referee showed him a yellow card for the action.
